There have been numerous legends thrown around in thin air about the origin of coffee; however, the fact remains that no one knows about the real source of coffee. Another account details the life of Omar, who was known for his healing abilities – he was able to cure the sick through his powers of prayer. He was once sent to exile outside of Mecca, where he, in a rather hungry state came across a particular variety of beans, which he found to be rather bitter after chewing them. But he was starving and needed something to ingest rather desperately. To enhance the flavor, Omar tried roasting the beans, but to his dismay, they became hard on roasting, which was worse. Finally, Omar tried boiling the beans, which resulted in a fragrant liquid with great flavor, upon consumption of which Omar was revitalized and managed to sustain there for days.
There is another popular account covering the Ethiopian peninsula, which says that there was a goat herder who found his goats in an extremely energized state upon the consumption of certain berries. The astounded goat-herder reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery, who personally investigated into the matter and discovered the berries to truly have revitalizing and energizing properties as upon consumption of the liquid prepared with the berries, he acquired great energy and stamina and was kept wide awake throughout the long hours of the evening prayer. This finding was soon spread to other monks who were residing in the monastery, and the power of these berries became well-known, soon enough. This legend, although popular, has propagated through word of mouth and has not appeared in writing ever.
